Is It Better To Keep Your AC At A Constant Temperature

Air conditioners are efficient when you want to control the temperature of your room. However, although air conditioners are beneficial in providing the best environment in our home, you may have wondered about some of the ways you can save energy. This is why most people ask is it better to keep your AC at a constant temperature.

Your air conditioner is usually controlled through a thermostat. This thermostat is the one that controls the temperature in your house and provides you with comfort when the weather is too hot or cold.

People control their thermostats differently depending on their preferences. Some people may micromanage their temperature settings by changing them constantly, while others may set it at one temperature and rarely change it.

So, the question is; is there a right way to set the temperature of your thermostat? There is no direct answer to this question, but only the advantages and disadvantages of using these methods.

Benefits of Setting Your AC at a Constant Temperature

Some people usually leave their thermostats at a constant temperature for several reasons. Some people may find the steady temperature convenient and comforting, while others avoid having to go through the effort of constantly changing their air conditioner every time. However, it has been proven that the main benefit of keeping your air conditioner at a constant temperature is that it offers you convenience.

It’s important to note that when you’re away on vacation or gone for the weekend, it’s efficient to have a consistent temperature. However, having this consistent temperature doesn’t offer you any additional benefits when you’re at home. Unfortunately, that’s the plain truth regarding the method of keeping your AC at a constant temperature. What you get is only the convenience of not having to worry about changing it every other time and no other benefit,

This may be disappointing for some people to hear, mainly because they think there is a “magic” effect of using this method. I hate to break it down to you but, there aren’t any other benefits other than what I’ve mentioned above. This method also comes with its disadvantages, which are essential for you to know. Like most other things or methods involving an air conditioner, leaving your AC at a constant temperature may sometimes be inconvenient. Check out below some of the disadvantages.

Disadvantages of Leaving Your AC at a Constant Temperature

So, is it better to keep your AC at a constant temperature? Of course, the fact that it only provides you with convenience. But, let’s take a look at some of the disadvantages of doing this.

It Leads to Heat Energy Leakage

When you leave your AC at a constant temperature, it’s mostly aimed at keeping the thermal energy inside your home constant. Therefore, this will make the inside of your house warmer than the outside.

First, you need to consider how heat moves from one area to another to understand this clearly. Note that heat is usually transferred from a region with a high concentration to a region with a low concentration.

Due to this fact, the heat energy needed to maintain the temperature at the hotter region features the energy that is “leaked” to the other end. Therefore, when there’s a higher difference between these two points, the heat loss to the surrounding area will be faster. This is similar to what happens with house temperatures.

When the temperature is too high inside than outside, the more rapidly the energy will leak. This brings about a massive disadvantage because maintaining this energy leakage can increase your utility bill.

The Best Way to Control Your Air Conditioner

So, how best should you control your air conditioner? Below are some tips that you need to consider.

Use the 8-hour Routine

If you want an easier way to remember to change your air conditioner’s temperature, then consider the 8-hour routine. This is also known as the work routine and can be quite suitable to use in your home and avoid having to leave the thermostat at a constant temperature for a very long time.

This means you have to change the temperature of your AC every 8 hours to an efficient setting. If you leave for work every day and come back after 8 hours, you can set it in the morning before leaving and then set it again when you come back.

Having an efficient setting on your air conditioner will help to reduce energy leakage. The most recommended option is to try as much as possible to have your AC have a similar temperature to the outside one without creating an uncomfortable environment in your home.

However, that doesn’t mean you should get your AC’s temperature at 40 degrees Fahrenheit when it’s also 40 degrees Fahrenheit outside.

All you need to do is just some small adjustments to create a positive impact in your home. For instance, if it’s 40 outside, you can try and set your AC to 60 inside or even lower at 55, especially when you’re leaving for work in the morning.

But, if you usually keep your home at about 70 when the weather is hot outside, you can increase it to about 75 or 80 when you want to leave the house and then lower it when you come back.

It is these small changes on your air conditioner that help to lower your energy bill significantly. These small changes also help provide you with the best experience in your home and offer as much comfort as possible.

Air conditioners are designed to provide a comfortable environment in our homes or workplaces when the weather outside is unbearable. During the winter, air conditioners are supposed to keep you warm, and during the summer, they are supposed to keep you cool and comfortable.

Programmable Thermostat

The best solution to consider when it comes to controlling your air conditioner’s temperature is to use one that comes with a programmable thermostat. This is the ideal solution to consider because it’s not only easier to use but also energy-efficient.

Once you use a programmable thermostat after a few days of routinely adjusting it, it will start doing the work for you, which means you won’t always have to be setting it up every few hours.

It has been proven that the people who use air conditioners with programmable thermostats and let them work on their behalf save more energy than the micromanagers.

Therefore, there is no denying that this is one of the most convenient options to consider, instead of fully relying on the 8-hour routine that you might end up always forgetting every once in a while.

Conclusion

The question remains is it better to keep your AC at a constant temperature? What you need to know is that it largely depends on you and what you need. I’ve discussed in this post some of the benefits and drawdowns that come from having your AC remain at the same temperature for long.

I’ve also shared a beneficial option of using an AC that features a programmable thermostat – which is quite advantageous. Therefore, the choice remains yours depending on what you deem suitable and beneficial to you.
